LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears agreed to a three-year contract with defensive end Willie Young and a one-year deal with receiver Domenik Hixon on Thursday. Young joins a defence that is getting a makeover after struggling in a big way last season. The Bears released eight-time Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers this week and brought in defensive end Lamarr Houston from Oakland, linebacker Jordan Senn from Carolina and safeties Ryan Mundy (New York Giants) and M.D. Jennings (Green Bay). Now, they have two new starting ends in Young and Houston. "This is important for us to get a second defensive lineman, a quality starter, an opportunity for Willie to grow and for us to grow with him," general manager Phil Emery said on a conference call. "When we went into free agency we felt that if we could find a way to get two starting defensive linemen, we would have made forward progress. Weve been able to accomplish that." The 28-year old Young spent four years with Detroit and can play on the left or right side. He had 47 tackles, three sacks, five pass breakups and two fumble recoveries last season. He had discussions with Jacksonsville but wound up in Chicago, instead. "Having (linebacker Lance) Briggs here anchoring the middle, it goes a long ways, having that solid leadership starting from the middle and working our way out," Young said. "Im excited to be here. And Im looking forward to a very aggressive defence here in the making. And right now theres nothing to stop us other than ourselves." Hixon had seven catches for 55 yards with Carolina in 2013. He has experience returning kickoffs and punts but did neither for the Panthers. Emery said he will get an opportunity to do that with Devin Hester gone. He previously played for Denver (2006-07) and the New York Giants (2007-12). In Chicago, hell be reuniting with quarterback Jay Cutler and receiver Brandon Marshall, his teammates with the Broncos. Meanwhile, Emery said cornerback Charles Tillmans return remains "an ongoing process" and had no update on the free agent. He also said time is running short on defensive tackle Henry Melton to re-sign. Meltons been visiting other teams. The Bears are open to bringing him back, but their available cap space is shrinking. "The clocks ticking," Emery said. Melton was arrested and charged with assault and public intoxication following an altercation at a Dallas-area bar in December. His agent has said Melton did not start the incident. "I think thats been an ongoing issue in terms of that issue coming to conclusion," Emery said. "In terms of evaluating Henry the player, thats separate from that." Ray Lewis Jersey . They were right in that they responded to coach Randy Carlyles goaltending switch to erase a two-goal deficit. JOHNS, N.SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants needed four innings to figure out Cleveland starter Zach McAllister. Hunter Pence hit a two-run single in San Franciscos four-run fifth, leading the Giants to a 5-3 victory over the Indians on Saturday. "That one inning, it just got contagious," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. McAllister (3-1) retired 12 in a row before Michael Morse led off the fifth with a single to centre. Morse advanced to third on Brandon Crawfords one-out single and scored on Gregor Blancos pinch-hit single that came on a first-pitch fastball. "Coming off the bench, its not that easy to do," Blanco said. "In that situation to get a pinch hit and drive one in ... you just got to be aggressive." Angel Pagan had a sacrifice fly before Pences two-out hit gave the Giants a 4-3 lead. McAllister left after Brandon Belt struck out to end the inning. He allowed five hits, struck out six and walked one after winning his previous three starts. Buster Posey added a solo homer in the sixth as San Francisco earned its third consecutive win. Posey, who won the NL MVP award in 2012, went 1 for 3 and is batting .103 (4 for 39) over his last 13 games. "I was happy for Buster," Bochy said. "You go through these tough streaks and its not easy." Giants starter Tim Lincecum lasted just 4 2-3 innings, but managed to lower his ERA to 5.96. He was charged with three runs, two earned, and nine hits. "We did a really good job of making (Lincecum) work," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "We just werent able to get that one more hit to tack on." Lincecum has pitched just 25 2-3 innings in five starts in his first season since he signed a $35 million, two-year contract over the winter. "I had my game plan. I just wasnt executing it," Lincecum said. "That kind of exacerbated the feeling of hopelessness, I guess.dddddddddddd Well, not hopelessness, but just things arent going right. Fix that tomorrow." But San Francisco continued to get strong work from its bullpen. Juan Gutierrez (1-1), Jean Machi, Jeremy Affeldt and Sergio Romo combined for 4 1-3 hitless innings after Lincecum departed. Romo got three outs for his sixth save in six chances as San Franciscos bullpen lowered its MLB-best home ERA to 0.45 in 11 games. "Very impressive," Bochy said. "They won the game for us today with the job they did." Bochy went out of his way to praise Gutierrez for striking out Yan Gomes with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning. Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher and David Murphy had two hits apiece for Cleveland. Jason Kipnis drove in two runs. Cleveland scored in the first, third and fifth to build a 3-0 lead. Kipnis singled in Bourn in the first and drove in Swisher with a grounder in the third. Swisher doubled home Bourn in the fifth. Saturday marked the 257th straight regular-season sellout at AT&T Park, matching the National League record set by the Philadelphia Phillies from July 7, 2009 to Aug. 5, 2012.
