Panama City, Panama (SportsNetwork.com) - Hao Tong Li fired a 5-under 65 in Saturdays third round and he moved atop the leaderboard at the season-opening Panama Claro Championship. Li ended 54 holes at 9-under-par 201. The China native topped the PGA Tour China money list in 2014 to earn his Web.com Tour card for 2015. This is his first career start on the Web.com Tour. Second-round leader Harold Varner III tripped to a 1-over 71 and he slid into a share of second place at minus-8. He was joined there by Mathew Goggin, who carded an even-par 70 that included back-to-back double-bogeys that dropped him from the lead. Martin Piller fired a 6-under 64, the low round of the day at Club de Golf de Panama, and he vaulted into a tie for fourth at 7-under 203. He stands alongside Henrik Norlander, who shot 68 on Saturday. Shane Bertsch (66) and Oliver Goss (67) share sixth at minus-6. Li moved to 6-under with birdies at the second and fourth. He tripped to a bogey at the par-3 eighth. Around the turn, back-to-back birdies at 10 and 11 moved Li to minus-7. He stumbled to another bogey at the 13th, but quickly erased that mistake with a birdie at 14th. The 19-year-old was still one behind Varner at that point. Li jumped into the lead as he birdied 16 and 18 to close to out his round. I dont look at the leaderboards. We still have a lot of holes to play. I was just trying to play my game. I wasnt thinking about the leaders today, admitted Li. Varner played the front nine in even-par with a birdie at the fourth and a bogey at the seventh to go with seven pars. He moved to 9-under with a birdie at No. 10. Varner tripped to bogeys at 12 and 13, but came right back with a birdie on the 14th. However, Varner faltered to another bogey at 15 to dip to minus-8. He parred the final three holes to end there. Goggin opened with five pars in a row before making three birdies in a 4-hole span from the sixth. That burst moved him into the lead at 11-under. Trouble loomed though as he struggled to double-bogeys at 10 and 11 to tumble to minus-7. Goggin bounced back with a birdie at 12 before making bogey at 13. he dipped to 6-under when he bogeyed the 16th, but Goggin birdied the final two holes to gain a share of second place. That was so irritating. At worst, those should have been a couple of bogeys. One behind, one round to go, said Goggin. NOTES: Li won three times on the PGA Tour China last season and had eight top-10 finishes in 12 starts ... Li started the season as the second-highest ranked Web.com Tour player at world No. 192, with only No. 173 Greg Chalmers higher than him in the rankings. Dennis Smith Jr. Jersey . In fact, his mentors hiatus from the UFC makes McDonalds quest to reach the top of the welterweight division a little easier. "It opens things up for me to get to where I want to be," MacDonald said this week. "Ive learned a lot from Georges. No extra pressure, Ive just got to be myself." It remains to be seen if St-Pierre will return to the sport he dominated, but the 24-year-old MacDonald — who goes by the nickname "Ares" — is intent on continuing his climb this Saturday at UFC 174 when he takes on Tyron (The Chosen One) Woodley in the co-main event at Rogers Arena. Both men have their sights set on Johny Hendricks welterweight title, with MacDonald ranked as the No. 2 challenger and Woodley at No. 3. Shy in front of the media glare, MacDonald said he just has to continue working on what has brought him to this point. "I think people like me for who I am," said MacDonald, who was born in Quesnel, B.C., but now trains in Montreal. "Ive gotten to the position Im in because of being who I am — a couple stumbles along the way but I feel like Im hitting my stride right now." One of those stumbles actually came in Vancouver when MacDonald (16-2) lost at UFC 115 in June 2010 to Carlos Condit. His only other defeat came to Robbie Lawler in a split decision at UFC 167 in November, but MacDonald rebounded to beat Demian Maia in a spplit decision at UFC 170 in February.dddddddddddd "You pick and choose your spots. You play between defence and offence against other good fighters," said MacDonald. "I just had a great training camp. No injuries and things went great. I felt great in my sparrings and my techniques are sharp." Woodley (13-2), a two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, has just three UFC bouts under his belt, including a technical knockout victory over Condit at UFC 171 in March. MacDonald said if he fights to his strengths against Woodley, he should come out on top. "I know the techniques. They come out as instinct right now," said MacDonald. "Ive trained them so much. So Ive just got to go in there and do my thing. "Im ready for everything. Last time here was unbelievable, the response I got. If its the same, more, or less Ill be ready." In a era where athletes in all sports are constantly looking for an edge, MacDonald said he doesnt study video of his opponents before a fight, preferring to use his instincts. "Ive fought a lot of people in the past — never seen them, never heard of them and had to deal with their problems," he said. "I find it easier to do it like that, to react in the cage." MacDonald is hoping for the same against Woodley on Saturday night. "Hes a great fighter. To beat him you have to be tricky and use good techniques," he said. "I feel very confident in my abilities and the solutions I have."
