LIVERPOOL, England -- With their title dreams extinguished, Liverpools players circled the pitch inside Anfield Stadium, heads bowed, to the backdrop of another passionately sung rendition of club anthem "Youll Never Walk Alone. Vladimir Tarasenko Jersey ." The final match of the Reds season could have been a celebration of the most unlikely championship triumph in Premier League history. It ended up being a tale of what might have been. Liverpool came up short Sunday in its bid for a first league title in 24 years, finishing two points behind champion Manchester City despite a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Newcastle. Brendan Rodgers team did their part on what proved to be an anticlimactic last day, passing the 100-goal mark for the league campaign after near-identical strikes in the space of two second-half minutes by Daniel Agger and Daniel Sturridge. That clinched a club-record 26th league victory. But Liverpool was also relying on a favour from West Ham at Etihad Stadium, which was always unlikely to happen. City won 2-0, keeping the trophy out of Liverpools grasp. "Im devastated for the fans," Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard said. "Although weve made them dream, Im devastated we didnt go that one step more." If there was any frustration inside Rodgers after the final whistle, he hid it well. For Liverpool had the destiny of the title in its hands just three weeks ago, when it beat Norwich 3-2 for an 11th straight win. Then came a decisive nine days when Rodgers side lost 2-0 at home to Chelsea before conceding three goals in the final 11 minutes to draw 3-3 at Crystal Palace. It meant there was more hope than expectation heading into the Newcastle match. "We finished the season winning 12 games out of 14," Rodgers said. "So the players have shown incredible level of consistency and quality in that period ... wed prefer to finish top, but its a great mark of progress this season." Anfield has seen previous last-game drama, with Arsenal winning 2-0 here in 1989 thanks to an injury-time goal from Michael Thomas to snatch the title from Liverpool. Twenty-five years on, Journeys famous song "Dont Stop Believin" blared out before kickoff. But all hope among Liverpool fans was gone by halftime, with their team 1-0 down thanks to Martin Skrtels own goal in the 20th minute and City having virtually guaranteed finishing first by going 1-0 up against West Ham. After a poor first half, Liverpool steeled itself to finish the season on a high, with Gerrard crossing for Agger to volley in after 63 minutes and then producing a similar delivery for Sturridge to tap in at the far post. It was all in vain. "When we went in front and there was no roar from the crowd, I realized the story was elsewhere," Rodgers said. Having started so positively, Newcastle imploded after the break in conceding two quick goals and then seeing Shola Ameobi and Paul Dummett both sent off. Ameobi received two yellow cards in 10 seconds for dissent as he argued with the referee about fouls in the build-up to Liverpools goals, before Dummett departed after a high challenge on Luis Suarez. Sunday was all about Liverpool, though, not Newcastle. From a seventh-place finish last season, Liverpool almost achieved what many considered impossible. "The word now is belief -- belief that we can be up there challenging," said Rodgers, who read out to his squad before the match a letter from a young fan called Ben -- sent before the start of the season -- which urged the players to believe they could win the title. "Probably at the time, the players and maybe the staff all thought the letter was maybe far-fetched," Rodgers added. "But I truly believe we could progress. "For us, its been a wonderful campaign of growth and development." The Premier League remains elusive to the 33-year-old Gerrard, who sees hope for the future. "I thought my days of title races had gone," he said, "but having played with this group of players this year the dream is back. Although Ive only got a couple of years left I still believe I can get there." Ryan OReilly Jersey . Now, Sarah Burkes legacy will live on in Canadas Sports Hall of Fame. According to a report from ESPN, sources said Manuels college coach Jimbo Fisher told teams he didnt think Manuel had the tools to be an NFL starter.Teddy Sheringham is in no doubt that captain Wayne Rooney has to start for England at Euro 2016. Rooney is facing increased competition ahead of this summers championships, with the likes of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy consistently scoring in the Premier League, reaching 21 and 19 goals respectively, while Rooney has found the net seven times.Despite struggling for both form and fitness this season, former England striker Sheringham insists there should not be any question over Rooneys place in the team, and believes he is integral to the sides hopes this summer. Wayne Rooney has struggled in front of goal for Manchester United this season Hes a proven goal scorer at international level. He knows the game and he knows where to be at the right time, said Sheringham.I think he would accommodate Harry Kane perfectly. I feel his best position is just behind the front man. He wouldnt get in Kanes way, and Kane wouldnt get in Rooneys way.He makes the team tick, he can play defensively if need be in that sort of area. I think were going to need that experience.Hes been there at those major tournaments - its not just about youth and pace - you have to have a bit of everything in a football team, and Rooney adds so much. While Rooney will not feature in Englands clash with the Netherlands on Tuesday, Tottenham striker Kane almost certainly will. Harry Kane has been in great form for club and country this season As well as his continued form in front of goal for his club, Kane has also scored four times in nine appearances for the national team, including Englands first against Germany on Saturday.Sheringham, who scored 98 league goals during two spells at Tottenham, believes Kane will only go from strength to strength.I think hes got everything as a striker. He can score with his left foot, right foot, headed goals, he can score from range and in the six-yard box. Teddy Sheringham explains why Harry Kane is such a rare talent He can run long he can drop off into areas that ask the defenders questions, he can hold the ball up and hes strong. Pierre Turgeon Jersey. Hes got a bit of everything.Hes the complete striker. At an early age, hes very unusual. You dont usually get to know your own game until you are 26, 27 or 28, when you come into your prime. He seems to know about his game - he wants to score goals and he wants to show you that he wants to score goals, and long may it continue. Should Rooney start at Euro 2016? Get involved in the debate over whether captain should start. Kane was one of four Spurs players to receive high praise following their performances in Berlin on Saturday. Dele Alli, Danny Rose and Eric Dier all featured too, and Sheringham told Sky Sports News HQ that the good understanding between players could benefit England at the Euros.Yes its important that players understand each others different ways of playing when playing for England. The more players know about each other, the better. Whether thats going to be the winning partnership in the Premier League, who knows, it might be the other partnership in the east Midlands. Sheringham scored 11 times for England between 1993 and 2002 Sheringham also revealed his preferred England lineup for the tournament. Aside from confirming a Kane-Rooney partnership, he also believes there should be a recall for Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.I feel in a major tournament, Michael Carrick is a must for me.Hes not in this squad but hes a player who wants to get on ball, makes teams tick, makes other players look good around him. If things are going bad, he will get on the ball and try and make things happen.Carrick and Henderson can sit back and free up Barkley and Alli. Up front, wed have a devastating partnership of Rooney and Kane. Theres goals all over the pitch there, players that can keep the ball at the right times which you have to do, and a bit of composure as well. Also See: Should Rooney start for England?
