everybody has something to prove
MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- Mark Sanchez plans on staying put after this season. As unlikely as it may seem because of his hefty contract, the injured quarterback wants to return to the New York Jets. And, Sanchez joked, he could be back with a super-powered arm. "The way things are coming along, it sounds like Ill be bionic," Sanchez said with a big smile Tuesday. "I dont want to say like Rookie of the Year, but hopefully something like that, where Ill come back better." Sanchez is out for the season after tearing the labrum in his right shoulder in the preseason and having surgery early last month. He spoke publicly Tuesday for the first time since his surgery before volunteering at a community soup kitchen at Church of the Redeemer in Morristown. The quarterback has three years remaining on his contract, but his $13.1 million salary cap number for next season makes it unlikely the team would keep him at that amount. If it were up to Sanchez, though, he wouldnt go anywhere. "Thats all Im thinking about, coming back next year, leading this team and playing well," he said. "I know Ive heard a lot of stuff on the outside about me not being here and stuff like that. I dont know if thats necessarily the case in the building. Hopefully, not. Hopefully, Im a Jet. "Thats where I am. Thats where I want to be." When asked if he truly sees a future in New York as the Jets quarterback, Sanchez didnt hesitate. "Absolutely," he said. "I mean, theres no doubt about that. Its been a dream come true to play here and I dont want to go anywhere else, thats for sure. I know I have (three) years left, and I dont ever want that to end. I love being a Jet and I plan on being here." Sanchez has not spoken to the team about his future with the franchise, but it would make financial sense for the Jets to release him in March. Thats when a $2 million roster bonus is due, and the move would save the Jets $8.3 million in cap space. "Well see what happens," he said. Sanchez was injured in the Jets third preseason game against the Giants when Marvin Austin slammed into his shoulder. Coach Rex Ryan was heavily criticized for putting Sanchez in the game in relief of rookie Geno Smith because it was widely assumed the veteran had likely won the quarterback competition -- and was playing with mostly backups and third-stringers at the time of the injury. While his doctors have been happy with his progress, Sanchez acknowledged it has been tough to be a spectator while bouncing between doctor visits in New Jersey, California and Florida. "Its definitely different, something I dont wish on anybody," he said. "Not even on your worst enemy you dont wish this on. Its hard to be away. Its hard to not be in the locker room, be on the plane, be on the bus. Little things like that, you miss it so much. "All the wins, even the tough times, the struggles, it makes you appreciate those times and how much you love being out on the field and how much you love playing." In an ironic twist, the Jets could actually use Sanchez in a big way at this point. He looked mostly solid during the summer in Marty Mornhinwegs system before the injury. "Its just tearing me up that I cant play for him," Sanchez said. Smith is struggling mightily with one touchdown and 10 interceptions in his last six games, but the only other options are inexperienced backup Matt Simms and veteran David Garrard, who hasnt played a regular-season game since 2010. Through it all, Sanchez focuses only on getting back on the field. "This could be a blessing in disguise," he said. "A lot of people have told me that. Its hard to see that while youre going through it, but it does give you a different perspective." NOTES: Sanchez created a stir on Twitter last week when a picture of him wearing his hair in corn rows surfaced. He said it was the result of losing a bet to a friend, and chose the corn rows -- which he had for only a few days and were gone Tuesday -- over shaving his head or dying his hair. "It was pretty bad," he said. "It was ugly." ... Jets owner Woody Johnson was nominated by the team for the NFLs Salute to Service Award, presented by the league and USAA for "commitment to honouring and supporting the military community." LeSean McCoy doubled DeMarco Murrays rushing total. The defence dominated a heralded offensive line. The Philadelphia Eagles made it clear theyre still the team to beat in the NFC East with a convincing 33-10 win at Dallas on Thanksgiving. The Eagles (9-3) took over sole possession of first place going into the final month, but will play the Cowboys (8-4) again Dec. 14 at home.Dallas gets a lot of hype. They have good players but we have a good team, too, McCoy said. Every team has its day. Im sure the next time we play them it will be a tougher game, even if it is in Philly.McCoy ran for 159 yards and a touchdown. He went over 1,000 yards for the fourth time in five years, topping 100 yards for the fourth time in the last seven games after not doing it in the first five. The reigning NFL rushing champion may not catch Murray, but hes focused on team goals. The best running back in the league is the one who wins the Super Bowl, McCoy said. The Eagles will have to finish one game ahead of Green Bay (8-3) and Arizona (9-2) to earn a first-round bye because they lost to the Packers and Cardinals. Next up is tough matchup against the defending Super Bowl champions. The Seattle Seahawks (8-4) visit Philadelphia on Dec. 7 following a win at San Francisco on Thursday night.Coach Chip Kelly gave players four days off to rest before they begin preparations for the Seahawks. There wont be any quarterback controversy when the team returns to practice.Making his fourth start for the injured Nick Foles, Sanchez played his best game of the season. He finished 20 of 29 for 217 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions. Foles still isnt ready to play after breaking his collarbone on Nov.dddddddddddd. 2, but Sanchez may not relinquish the starting job.Dream come true, Sanchez said of resurrecting his career after being dumped by the New York Jets. Best of times, worst of times. A lot of people would love to be in this position. The key to Philadelphias success on offence was the line. A group thats been depleted by injuries throughout the season is playing better now that four of the five regular starters are healthy. With McCoy leading the way, the Eagles had 256 yards rushing. Chris Polk had 48 and even Sanchez chipped in with 28.We finally started to see the cohesion, centre Jason Kelce said. Weve had some continuity along the offence line for a little while now. Its not that guys went in and did a bad job. Guys that went in did great individual jobs. When you have five guys working together and really on the same page, this was the best weve been throughout the season. And theres still room for improvement. On defence, the front seven pressured and harassed Romo and a much-maligned secondary shut down Dez Bryant. Romo threw two interceptions and his streak of 38 straight games with a touchdown pass was snapped. Bryant had four catches for 73 yards and was visibly frustrated on the sideline. You look at our entire defence, everybody has a chip on their shoulder, everybody has something to prove, safety Malcolm Jenkins said. We dont have a lot of big-name guys, but we have group that loves playing together and is not afraid to compete against anybody.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL___Follow Rob Maaddi on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AP_RobMaaddi ' ' '
