beating Chelsea showed the enviable depth of resources
HAMILTON, Ont. Stitched Soccer Jerseys . -- The Hamilton Bulldogs trailed on three separate occasions on Tuesday, but had an answer for every setback. Louis Leblanc scored in overtime to cap a three-point night as the Bulldogs overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat the Rockford IceHogs 5-4 in American Hockey League action. "It shows a lot of resiliency on the part of our players," said Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "We had guys step up, even though were a little short on bodies. The guys who were brought into the lineup did their jobs, and we had contributions from everyone." Sven Andrighetto had two goals for the Bulldogs (2-1-2), while Nick Tarnasky and Akim Aliu also scored. Alius goal tied the game with 19 seconds left in the third period. Dustin Tokarski made 24 saves in the win. Mark McNeill scored twice for the IceHogs (4-2-1), while Garret Ross and Terry Broadhurst also scored. Kent Simpson made 31 saves for Rockford. Leblanc completed the comeback for the Bulldogs 1:03 into overtime, crashing the net after Gabriel Dumonts initial chance to chip a close-range shot over the sprawled Simpson. The Hamilton forward was relieved to score his first goal of the season, but acknowledged that he has much left to improve upon. "It feels good but Im not satisfied," he said. "It felt nice to get the first goal and I have to build on that. The first few games were harder for me, but I have that confidence now and hopefully I can build on it." Hamilton endured a nightmare start to the night, conceding the opening goal just 31 seconds into the first period. McNeill held the puck along the left boards and found Ross unguarded in the low slot with a centring pass. Ross bent low and one-timed the pass high and over the shoulder of Tokarski. The IceHogs enjoyed sustained offensive pressure for much of the first period, with Hamilton being out-skated and routinely out-worked along the boards. The run of play was against them, but the Bulldogs struck next to level the game. A power play passed unsuccessfully, but Hamilton carried the momentum of the man advantage into five-on-five play. Leblanc skated the puck to the left circle and curled to protect it, sliding a pass to Tarnasky as he streaked toward the net. Tarnasky held and wound up a slapshot that eluded Simpson at 15:37 of the first. Hamilton began the second period well, and nearly took the lead when Erik Nystrom was sent in on a breakaway four minutes in. Duffy could only slide a weak wrist shot into the pads of Simpson, however. The Bulldogs continued to pressure, and Andrighetto came closest to scoring when his heavy wrist shot clipped the crossbar and bounced clear six minutes into the period. Hamilton was punished for its inability to finish chances when Rockford produced a beautiful passing play to take the lead at14:29. Pat Mullane carried the puck over the blue-line down the right wing and shifted it back to Jimmy Hayes in the middle. Hayes lightly flicked the puck through his legs and on to Broadhurst on the left, who deked wide and chipped a shot over the shoulder of Tokarski to make it 2-1 for the IceHogs. Successive penalties in the opening minutes of the third period saw the teams play three-on-three for nearly a minute before Rockford gained the man advantage when Ross penalty expired at 3:05. It was Hamilton, however, that struck on the penalty kill to tie the game 2-2 at 3:18 of the third. Andrighetto carried the puck over the blue-line on a lone rush and let loose a heavy slapshot from the top of the left circle that clipped the crossbar on its way past Simpson. The IceHogs retook the lead while on the power play at 7:46 of the third period. Broadhurst received a pass along the red-line, spun and found McNeill with a centring pass that the forward quickly shovelled past Tokarski. McNeill struck again at 16:05 to add a measure of insurance for the IceHogs, receiving a drop pass from Phillip Danault and taking a low slap shot from the top of the circle that eluded Tokarski to make it 4-2. Andrighetto brought the host Bulldogs back within a goal at 17:32, when a loose centring pass slid to him just inside the blue-line, and he easily fired the puck past Simpson while the goaltender was out of position. Aliu sent the game to overtime and set up Leblancs heroics by crashing the net and sliding a close-range shot past Simpson. Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri provided the goals to avenge a 1-0 league loss this month, with a formidable City in complete control and preventing Chelsea from hitting the target once. "We can beat everyone," Jovetic said. "We learnt something (from losing to Chelsea), you could see that on the pitch." Although Chelsea leads the league, City is only three points behind in third with a game in hand after its midweek game was postponed due to bad weather. City also remains in Champions League contention, facing Barcelona at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, and meets Sunderland in the League Cup final next month. Sunderland also advanced in the FA Cup, with Craig Gardner clinching a 1-0 victory over Southampton. Wigan maintained its cup defence by winning 2-1 at Cardiff, with Ben Watson, whose goal clinched the cup before the team was relegated from the topflight last May, netting the winner in south Wales. In Sundays headline fixture in the fifth round, Arsenal hosts Liverpool in another meeting of Premier League title rivals. With City hosting Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday, beating Chelsea showed the enviable depth of resources available at Manuel Pellegrinis disposal. Jovetic, who is only Citys fourth-choice striker despite being signed last year at a cost of 24 million pounds ($40 million), first came close when he struck the crossbar from the rebound after goalkeeper Petr Cech fumbled Yaya Toures strike. Jovetic hit the woodwork again in the 16th minute but this time the ball went over the line as City ripped through a Chelsea defence missing captain John Terry. David Silva played in Edin Dzeko, who sent the ball out for Jovetic to strike off the post into the bottom left. It was just Joveticss sixth goal of an injury-hit start to his City career. Wholesale Soccer Jerseys China. City was far more assertive and cohesive than the side that was beaten here by Chelsea less than two weeks ago, with Dzeko also testing Cech with a curling shot. "We wanted revenge today," City captain Vincent Kompany said. "Twelve days ago we had a really bad game, we gave them a lot of chances." How different this game was. After failing to get a sight of goal in the first half, Chelsea striker Samuel Etoo was replaced at halftime, with Mohamed Salah coming on. The January signing didnt help to transform Chelseas fortunes, and forward Fernando Torres was brought off the bench on the hour to replace Ramires, taking a central position as Salah shifted to the right. But it was a City substitution that made a bigger impact as Nasri, in his first appearance in a month, completed an incisive move to score six minutes after coming on. After receiving the ball from Nasri, Silva squared it back to the Frenchman, who continued his run to dart into space between defenders David Luiz and Gary Cahill, and slot the ball in from close range. It was Citys 117th goal of a season that should end with a trophy unlike last year under Roberto Mancini. "I had a lot of questions after Chelsea, if were going to change our way of playing," Pellegrini said, referring to the 1-0 loss. "But I repeat: We will not change the way we play. Today was important to show why we continue to play in the same way." Chelsea can only win on two fronts -- the Premier League and Champions League -- and Jose Mourinhos side has the edge over City domestically having won both league encounters. "We were never close to scoring or being dominant, or bringing a scare to the game," Mourinho said. "Today there was a different freshness between the teams ... and one team had a week without professional football," he added. ' ' '
