The Vancouver Canucks enter the 2014-15 NHL season with a fresh mindset, after a lost season the previous year. And the new-look Canucks get their first crack at game action tonight in Calgary. The Canucks struggled through a 36-35-11 season last year, enduring a 1-10-1 stretch in January and February and closing with a 2-5-0 finish. That resulted in the Flames grabbing Sam Bennett with the fourth overall pick, but Bennett is out longterm with a shoulder injury that may require surgery. Shanahan, fired following a rocky fourth season with Washington, will interview Wednesday to be Clevelands offensive co-ordinator. Hes to meet with coach Mike Pettine, who has been assembling his staff since his hiring last week. The 34-year-old Shanahan and father Mike Shanahan, the Redskins former head coach, were let go by Washington on Dec. 30 after going 3-13. Shanahan has interviewed for at least two other co-ordinator positions this month, but was passed over by Baltimore and Miami. Also, the Browns intend to interview Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo on Thursday. Shanahan spent four seasons with Washington after two as Houstons offensive co-ordinator. He and his fathers relationship with Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III reportedly deteriorated during this past season, and at least partly contributed to the teams decision to move in another direction.
